As a Indian we don’t need any introduction to Navratri. It is celebrated across India. Every state has a different style of celebrating Navratri like Gujaratis love to do Dadiya (a dance form) during Navratri, we all know the importance of Durga pooja for Bengalis. In my state M.P. people do the nine days fasting and on 8th or 9th day after Kanya Bhojan they break the fast.
Nine days are dedicated to nine forms of goddess Durga.
- Shailaputri – Shail means mountain and putri means daughter. As per Indian mythology, she is the daughter of king of mountain Himalaya so named as shailaputri. Sati, Parvati, Bhavani are other names of Shailputri. She is wife of Lord Shiva and mother of Lord Kartik and Ganesh.
वन्दे वांच्छितलाभाय चंद्रार्धकृतशेखराम् ।
वृषारूढ़ां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम् ॥
2. BrahmaCharini – She is unmarried form of Parvati. She want to get married to Lord Shiva but got rejection. So she decided to perform hard austerity. She has done fasting for 1000 years and slept on the floor.
दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू।
देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा॥
3. Chandraghanta – She is married form of Parvati. She wears the half moon lie lord Shiva. She is symbol of bravery.
पिण्डजप्रवरारूढ़ा चण्डकोपास्त्रकेर्युता।
प्रसादं तनुते मह्यं चंद्रघण्टेति विश्रुता॥
4. Kushmunda – It is believed that goddess Kushmunda created the universe with her smile. Her name formed accordingly Ku means “a little”, Ushma means “warmth” or “energy” and Anda means “cosmic egg”.
सुरासम्पूर्णकलशं रुधिराप्लुतमेव च।
दधाना हस्तपद्माभ्यां कुष्मांडा शुभदास्तु मे।
5. Skand Mata – Skand mata means mother of lord Skanda. Skanda is the another name of Lord Kartik. In this form she holds infant lord Kartikeya in her hand. Kartikeya save humankind from Raksha Tarakasur.
सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया।
शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कंदमाता यशस्विनी॥
6. Katyayani – She is born to Rishi Katyayan so name as “Katyayani”. She is known as Warrior goddess. Raksha Mahishasur take a boon from Lord Brahma that no man can kill him. Goddess challenged Mahishasur for duel and she killed him.
चंद्रहासोज्ज्वलकरा शार्दूलवरवाहना।
कात्यायनी शुभं दद्याद्देवी दानवघातिनी॥
7. Kalratri – She is the most violent form of Goddess Durga. Also known as “Kaali”. She has black appearance and represents that there is also other side of mother Goddess which create fear among Rakshas or ill doers. Worshipping her make a person fearless.
एकवेणी जपाकर्णपूरा नग्ना खरास्थिता।
लम्बोष्ठी कर्णिकाकर्णी तैलाभ्यक्तशरीरिणी॥
वामपादोल्लसल्लोहलताकण्टकभूषणा।
वर्धनमूर्धध्वजा कृष्णा कालरात्रिर्भयंकरी॥
8. Maha Gauri – Maha means “great” Gauri means “white or fair”. Maha Gauri means extremely beautiful. As per Indian mythology because of some effects Goddess Parvati skin color become dark. As a effect of boon she turned fair after bathing in Mansorvar river in Himalaya. Eighth day color is Pink, which also represents beauty.
श्वेते वृषे समारूढ़ा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः।
महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्महादेवप्रमोदया॥
9. Siddhi Datri – She is the 9th Form of Goddess Durga. Siddhi means supernatural or meditative power, datri means giver. Worshiping her will help in getting blissful mind, meditative power.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मां सिद्धिदात्री रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।
